You are currently viewing Role of CBT in Enhancement of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EQ or EI) is a term coined by two researchers – Peter Salavoy and John Mayer which was popularized by Daniel Goleman in his 1996 book, “Emotional Intelligence”. Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to understand one’s own emotion as well as other’s emotion and use it efficiently, especially when the person is under pressure. So, possessing high emotional intelligence would help us to handle the situation in a far better way during the hour of need. Moreover, by possessing high emotional intelligence we can become aware of the fact that emotion drives our behavior and thus can have influence over other’s behavior.

Emotional intelligence helps us to handle the situation in a far better way during the hour of need

As per the demand of today’s competitive world, we must acquire this special skill in addition to our inherent quality of intelligence in order to be successful. Now, the question is whether this skill can be developed through training . The answer would be a BIG YES. Unlike intelligence, this is a trait which can be developed and applied to control and handle the life situations skillfully. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) has proved to be effective in such cases as altering the thoughts have a great impact on emotional control.

ÇBT helps to review the schema, identify and remove the negative components from it

When faced with a state of affairs, we judge it, try to interpret it which eventually gives rise to some emotions. Naturally, we differ from each other in this course of interpreting and judging a particular situation. The ‘cognitive appraisal’ of the situation rather than real situation is responsible for making it a hard nut to crack. Boss gave some extra assignments at weekend. One may interpret the situation as the boss’s intention of harassing him. This naturally evokes anger and resentment. Whereas another takes it as an opportunity to prove himself. He would experience a kind of enthusiasm. This individual difference in cognitive appraisal is mostly determined by the ‘schema’, a person holds on.The schema is developed and grounded on the plinth of personal beliefs, experiences, acquired components of the culture he/she belongs to. ÇBT helps to review the schema, identify and remove the negative components from it thus developing a more lenient one in order to help the person become emotionally intelligent.
